General Information: All K through fifth grade students visit the Media Center on their specified day according to the schedule. Please consult your child's schedule for actual dates. Students also visit on a rotating basis. Library books are not due on rotating days.
Kindergarten, first and second grade students choose Everybody and easy nonfiction books. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students may select from any section of the Media Center. The right way to select an appropriate book is continuously reinforced frequently as well as instruction on how libraries are organized.
Volunteers are welcome any time. Please see Mrs. Friedman if you are interested in helping in the Media Center. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Circulation: Each student selects a maximum of two books. Each morning the Media Center is available for book exchange from 9:00-9:20 am. Each student has a library card which is kept at the circulation desk.
When and how to return books: On the scheduled Media day a crate similar to a milk crate is placed in the classroom. Media helpers collect the crates around 9:20 am. If a student is late for school or forgets to put the books in the crate, the books should be brought to the Media Center during the scheduled class time.
Renewal procedure: Books may be renewed using the following procedure: 1) Do not place the book in the crate on Media day. 2) Bring the book to Media during the scheduled class time. 3) Use regular circulation procedures to renew the book.
Nonforgettors Wall of Fame: Each year approximately 75 students achieve placement on the Nonforgettors Wall of Fame. The names from the past five years are located above the Reference section. This honor is bestowed upon any student in K through 5th grade who remembers to return their library books every single Media day. Students are expected to take home at least one library book every week. An absent student is not expected to return books if they are not in school but asked to visit the Media Center in the morning following their return to school. Media is not scheduled on delayed opening days. Students are not to call home if they have forgotten their library book(s). The book must be returned by the scheduled Media time in order to count for the Nonforgettor Wall of Fame. This is something that Mrs. Friedman does to encourage students to return books on time, teach responsibility, and recognize students who meet the challenge. Please see Mrs. Friedman with any questions or concerns.
Lost or damaged books: If a student loses a book please send a note of explanation to Mrs. Friedman. Mrs. Friedman will send home a letter with a section for the parent to sign and return acknowledging payment if the book is not found and returned by the end of the school year. Damaged books should be returned to Mrs. Friedman by the student. Mrs. Friedman will send home a letter with the replacement cost and the student will resume book circulation when the bill is paid.
PAWS points: Classes earn PAWS points while in Media. To earn a maximum of six points the criteria are: 1) Be Prepared, 2) Cooperate with Neighbors, 3) Listen and Follow Directions, 4) Participate Correctly, 5) Use Library Voice, and 6) Responsible for Library Materials. At the end of each nine weeks, the class in each grade level with the highest average is awarded a Media Fun Day. |
